What is phosphenes ?

 

The strange things you see when you rub your eyes are known as phosphenes. Rubbing your eyes increases pressure and activates retinal ganglion cells in the same way light does. Your brain doesn't recognize the difference and interprets the activation as if it were seeing light from the outside world.
